    Slipped Disc

    What is an Intervertebral Disc?

The spine is an interconnected complex of bones, nerves, muscles, tendons, and ligaments. The vertebrae are the bony building blocks of the spine. The bones are stacked on top of each other and securely attached with a disc in between each one. The intervertebral discs serve as shock absorbers and help facilitate the movement of the spine.

    What is a Slipped Disc?

A slipped disc at the spine a common diagnosis among patients with pain in the back and neck areas. A slipped disc occurs when an intervertebral disc between two vertebrae bulges out of its normal position. Slipped discs are also referred to as prolapsed, ruptured or herniated discs. The causes of a slipped disc could vary, though in general it could be influenced by the degenerative changes of intervertebral discs due to mechanical factors (movements, postures, and activities), trauma, nutrient deficiency or genetic factors.

A 41-year-old housewife presented herself to us with severe pain in her neck and shoulder areas, accompanied by numbness in her right arm especially towards the end of her day. When enquired, it has come to our knowledge that she has been experiencing these problems for more than five years.
Our physiotherapists recommended a MRI scan to further narrow down the cause of her continuous pain and from that MRI, a disc protrusion could be observed at C5/C6 of the cervical vertebrae. The protrusion was also seen to be compressing the spinal cord.
After her thorough consultation, she attended 30 treatment sessions at Pro Care Physio, after which the disc protrusion has healed. Now, the patient is pain-free and living her life without any limitation.
An MRI scan after treatment showing the protruded disc being reabsorbed and the spine no longer being compressed.
